Building a fair rotating schedule by hand takes hours and leads to mistakes. This generator automatically produces a team rotation (2-shift, 3-shift, 12h or day), distributes rest days and calculates each employee's total hours.
How the rotation works
Each employee is assigned a shift (Morning, Afternoon, Night depending on the pattern) that rotates from one week to the next, so the burden of night and weekend shifts is shared.
The rotation cycle lasts as many weeks as there are crews: covering one post 24/7 on three shifts takes roughly five crews — 168 hours to cover each week divided by a contractual week of about 35 to 38 hours gives just under five. That is why continuous patterns are known as five-crew or continental shift systems.
Two consecutive rest days are set each week, staggered from one employee to another to ensure every slot is covered.
Total hours, days worked and nights worked are calculated per employee, which makes working-time records easy to keep and the legal ceilings easy to watch: an average of 48 hours a week over the reference period, and at least 11 consecutive hours of rest between two shifts.

What is a 3-shift (3x8) schedule?
The 3-shift system splits the day into three 8-hour shifts (morning, afternoon, night) to cover 24 hours. Employees rotate across these three slots from week to week.
How many crews does a continuous three-shift operation need?
Covering one post 24 hours a day, 7 days a week means covering 168 hours per week. Divided by a contractual week of about 35 to 38 hours, that comes to just under five crews — the five-crew or continental pattern. With only four crews, weekly rest becomes very hard to guarantee without permanent overtime.
What is the difference between two-shift, three-shift and 12-hour patterns?
A two-shift pattern runs two 8-hour shifts back to back (say 6am–2pm then 2pm–10pm) and leaves the night uncovered. A three-shift pattern adds the night shift and runs continuously. A 12-hour pattern cuts handovers to two a day, at the cost of longer days that need carefully planned rest periods.
Does the schedule respect weekly rest?
The generator sets two rest days per week per employee. Always check compliance with your local labor rules and maximum working hours.
What are the maximum working hours?
Under the EU Working Time Directive and the national rules that implement it, weekly working time must not exceed an average of 48 hours including overtime over the reference period, and workers are entitled to 11 consecutive hours of daily rest plus 24 hours of uninterrupted weekly rest. The per-employee hours summary helps you watch those limits; collective agreements may be more generous.
How are night hours handled?
Night work is defined by national law, usually a period of at least seven hours that includes midnight to 5am. Night workers' normal hours must not exceed an average of 8 hours per 24, with a hard limit for hazardous work. Night workers are also entitled to a health assessment, and most collective agreements add a premium or compensatory rest. The schedule counts nights per employee so that tracking stays simple.
